“Power up—innovative energy technologies” was the motto of the day on which former institute directors and a former executive board member came together in Freiburg to visit three of the local Fraunhofer institutes. In exciting guided tours, the alumni were able to gain insights into the state of research and sometimes even meet former colleagues. The topics were as rich as the cutting-edge research of the host institutes. They ranged, for example, from the world’s most efficient solar cell and crash tests for batteries in electric cars to optimized circuits for tomorrow’s information and communications technology.
A special reunion took place at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF. Former institute director Prof. Dr. Günter Weimann, who led the institute from 1995 to 2007 and is considered a pioneer of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and III-V semiconductor research—topics that are still at the heart of research at Fraunhofer IAF—met his successor in the second generation: Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Quay.
The annual general meeting of the Fraunhofer-Alumni e. V. took place digitally after the tours of the institutes.
