On June 14, 2024, the annual Students' Day of Fraunhofer IAF took place and offered the participants an insight into the diverse research areas of the institute: In addition to lectures and the presentation of the research portfolio, the program included laboratory tours and a visit to the clean room or the MOCVD machine hall.

“Fraunhofer IAF has a very broad research spectrum and I am very pleased that the students are interested in our research areas and that we can use the Students’ Day to show them our laboratories and outstanding infrastructure,” said Dr. Jutta Kühn, Deputy Head of Fraunhofer IAF.

In addition to the guided tours of the microelectronics, laser and diamond labs, highlights of the program included a visit to the clean room and the MOCVD machine hall. “I was most impressed by the large clean room. And then to learn what the systems do and the level of technology is used here was something new for me,” reported a student from the University of Freiburg.

The students had the opportunity to learn more about the different job opportunities at Fraunhofer IAF and to ask their questions about final theses during a panel discussion with Master and PhD students. “I will soon be writing my final thesis, so I was interested in finding out how the process works — how you are supervised here, what the day-to-day work is like. I learned a lot from the panel discussion,” said a student from the University of Stuttgart.

Next year, curious and motivated students will again have the opportunity to get to know Fraunhofer IAF as a place of research and work and to take a look inside the laboratories.
